In the course of two-year archaeological research at the territory of the Chizhevsky farmstead in the centre of Moscow, specialists found more than six thousand artifacts, which became the largest collection of finds in the city in recent times.

Among the unique finds are glass bracelets, kiln tiles and a temple ring of the XII century. This is reported by the
official portal of the Moscow Mayor and Moscow Government.

The research was conducted in the areas between Nikolskaya Street, Bogoyavlensky, Staropansky and Bolshoy Cherkassky pereuloks. Archaeologists studied cultural layers dating from the 12th to the 18th centuries, including remains dating back to the first mention of Moscow in chronicles. “The 2024 archaeological season was completed with a record number of finds and excavation area. The main site of the season was the Chizhevskoye podvorye,” said Aleksey Yemelyanov, Head of the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow.

Among the most significant finds stands out a hoard of the XVI century with more than 30 household items, as well as a large collection of ceramic fragments. Unique vessels and products help to trace the culture of pottery production of those times. After discovery, the artefacts are processed, cleaned and restored before being added to the museum collection.

The research was carried out on an area of about three thousand square metres, which made it possible to study in detail the cultural layers more than six metres deep, reflecting the development of Moscow as a trade and craft centre over the centuries.
