A Chinese company has developed and successfully tested the world’s first megawatt electrolyser to produce hydrogen from seawater. This achievement opens new perspectives for the development of the energy sector.

According to
CGTN, a partner of TV BRICS, the device has been tested, confirming its efficiency.

The electrolyser, whose main components are housed in five standard shipping containers, is capable of producing up to 200 normal cubic metres of hydrogen per hour with a purity of 99.9 per cent. According to engineer Li Zhichuan, the system is designed to utilise surplus electricity generated by offshore wind and solar farms.

“Seawater electrolysis offers advantages over traditional freshwater electrolysis,” Li noted.

A company spokesperson said that the new technology could form the basis for an environmentally friendly hydrogen-based energy consumption model in marine environments.
