India’s coffee exports have almost doubled in the last four years to reach US$1.29 billion in fiscal 2023-24 from US$719.42 million in 2020-2021. This has made India the seventh largest coffee producer in the world, according to a Commerce and Industry Ministry statement, reports
IANS, a partner of TV BRICS.
In the first half of January 2025, India exported over 9,300 tonnes of coffee. Thus, Indian coffee has significantly increased its export volumes due to the growing global demand for its rich and unique flavours.
About three-fourths of the total coffee produced in India is Arabica and Robusta, which are mostly exported in unroasted form. However, demand for value-added products such as roasted and instant coffee continues to grow, fuelling export growth.
With the increasing popularity of cafes, rising income levels and growing preference for coffee over tea, coffee consumption in India has also been steadily increasing and this trend is being witnessed in both urban and rural areas.
Domestic consumption has increased from 84,000 tonnes in 2012 to 91,000 tonnes in 2023. This growth reflects a broader change in consumption habits as coffee becomes an integral part of daily life.
