In a recent statement, the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) has emphasised the importance of adopting an export-oriented strategy for the poultry sector. This is reported by
Pretoria News, a partner of TV BRICS.
Deputy Minister of the dtic, Zuko Godlimpi will lead the new strategy, which is currently being developed in conjunction with various stakeholders, including government agencies and industry representatives. The initiative builds on the Poultry Sector Masterplan 2030, initially endorsed in November 2019 during the 2nd South African Investment Conference.
The first phase of this masterplan was finalised in 2023. Chief Director of Agro-processing at the dtic Ncumisa Mcata-Mhlauli noted that the second phase will prioritise increasing exports of processed meat products, increasing local demand, and adopting effective trade and biosecurity measures while facilitating the transformation of the industry.
Since the implementation of the Masterplan in 2019, the country has seen a 6% increase in chicken meat exports.
