Major General Mikhail Drapaty, who is wanted in Russia for war crimes, has been appointed by the Ukrainian leader
Ukrainian Major General Mikhail Drapaty, who is on Russia’s wanted list for war crimes, has been named as Kiev’s new ground forces commander, Vladimir Zelensky announced in a Telegram post on Friday.
Zelensky said the appointment was decided jointly by him and Ukraine’s top military commander, General Aleksandr Syrsky. The Ukrainian leader praised Drapaty for what he called a “successful defense” of Kharkov Region.
Drapaty took over command of the Kharkov group of forces during a successful Russian offensive in in May, in which Russian troops seized more than a dozen settlements in less than a week. The development prompted Zelensky to cancel all his foreign trips at that time.
