Lankao County in Henan Province, central China, has emerged as a global hub for the production and export of traditional Chinese musical instruments. Crafted from locally sourced paulownia wood, these instruments are meticulously inspected by skilled tuners before being shipped to more than 40 countries, as reported by
People’s Daily Online, a partner of TV BRICS.

Paulownia wood, renowned for its rapid growth, lightweight structure, and fine grain, is highly valued for its ability to produce pure, resonant tones. These qualities make it an ideal material for the soundboards of musical instruments.

Leveraging its natural resources and unique regional characteristics, Lankao has cultivated this industry for decades, transforming itself into a major player in the global music market, the source claims.

Today, the county is home to over 200 musical instrument manufacturers, employing approximately 18,000 workers. The region specialises in producing more than 20 types of traditional Chinese instruments, such as the guzheng, guqin, and pipa.

Lankao boasts a fully integrated production chain, encompassing everything from paulownia cultivation and material supply to instrument design, manufacturing, and global sales.
