Taye Atske Selassie becomes Ethiopia’s new president

Taye Atske Selassie was sworn in as President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia at a joint parliamentary session of the country on 7 October 2024.


At the ceremony, outgoing President Sahle-Work Zewde, who led the country since 2018, handed over the constitution to the new head of state.


For his part, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed extended his best wishes to the new president, Taye Atske Selassie, and stressed that the reforms underway are aimed at consolidating state institutions, with each official assuming his or her responsibilities during his or her tenure.


The United Nations (UN) in Ethiopia congratulated Taye Atske Selassie on his appointment and reaffirmed its commitment to continue working with the country to advance the development and implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to
Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC), a partner of TV BRICS. 


Ethiopia’s new president, Taye Atske Selassie, was born in Debark, in the Amhara region, and earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations at the University of Addis Ababa. 


Taye also represented Ethiopia as ambassador to Egypt and as permanent envoy to the United Nations. Upon his return in January 2023 and prior to his appointment as president, Taye had been Ethiopia’s foreign minister since February 2024.
